Do you have the will power to gve up smoking and keep reminding yourself you can have extra money to play with/put towards dets. If it were me id give em up if they were costing so much which in your case OP they are. A friend of mine from school has given up smoking and is on day 31. We cant tell you what to do though, we can suggest 1 whether to give up or not but you need to at least try to give up.
  • Stop smoking now and in 2 months your Natwest CC will be cleared and you'll still be up £50.

Hey, 147 days here. My motivation was my youngest daughter in tears asking me to stop and the thought of the look of disappointment in her eyes if I fail.

Also, £200 a month better off, can't be bad. Have you thought about using nicotine vaporisers instead? Not that stupid Nicorette rubbish, but a proper e-cig? Research online and don't pay any attention to recent 'reports' stating they are bad for you...nothing is as bad as smoking for your health and the government has a vested interest in keeping you hooked since smokers pretty much prop up the NHS with the duty and VAT they pay. Now, wouldn't you just love to deprive the government of even more of your hard earned money?

There are some "Make them yourself" fags that are a fraction of the cost after you've made about 60 of them. You get a rolling machine, a box of "empty paper tubes with a brown filter at the end" and tobacco in a packet that looks like a fag packet. You shove the baccy in the machine, poke the tube onto the end of the machine, pull it back/forward and it fills the tube, then you pop that fag into the packet..... so then you've got a cheap packet of fags that look like fags (not rollies).... just don't use them if you're driving in case you b4llsed one up and all the tobacco lands on your crotch on a roundabout.

I've seen them at most supermarkets so far.... I bought mine at the CoOp, but I know Asda have them.

This is the one I've got at the moment, but there are variations: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/500-Make-Your-Own-Cigarette-Filter-Tubes-King-Size-New-also-cigarette-maker-/290771338444?pt=UK_Collectables_Tobacciana_Smoking_LE&hash=item43b35284cc
  • oh my goodness - im so touched by everyone being so kind?
I felt a bit bad posting - my debt at least is manageable, and im going to get it cleared relatively quickly...But I know that giving up smoking will clear it so much faster...
There are lovely people on here who are struggling to feed themselves and their kids - and im moaning about wasting £200 on ciggies a month...
I will join the non smoking thread, thanks! I bought 4 packs of fruit polos on the way home (for some reason nicotine replacement doesnt work for me, but sucking on boiled sweets did in the past when I gave up for a year!) - so im going to start as a non smoker from tomorrow morning ...eeeeek!!
ps - Can I say congrats and thank you to all the people who have dramatically reduced their debt or have become debt free? - your posts, even your signatures are SO inspiring :) I cant wait for my debt free date, and you all make it seem achievable!

  • Nicotine gum is a good help in quitting - I'm an on-off smoker but mostly off these days, Nicotine gum is cheaper than smoking!
  • Give up now.

If it does not work and you start again then please consider using Champix. It's an oral tablet that does something to repress nicotine dependency in your brain.

I only smoked socially but it had crept up to become 10 or so a day - yet conversely I could last for a fortnight's holiday without any at all (my kids did not know I smoked you see). Yet despite this I simply could no give up. Due to my financial circumstances and my health I really wanted to though.

I 'bit the bullet' in the end and admitted to the Doctor that I was a smoker and wanted to stop. He gave me several choices and I decided on Champix. I stopped smoking about 5 days later I think and have never really craved one since. Smoking whilst on the medication was making me feel sick by day 5 and it has left me associating cigs with nausea.:T

I now feel cleaner (no stale smoke) and healthier. I have far more energy and can manage my finances better. It's a fantastic feeling:A

I tried those make your own. I really liked the concept and it was a fraction of the cost but the tobacco for that particularly brand was way too rough for my throat. I couldn't find any other brands to try... Anyone got any ideas?
