Default Charge for an original amount of £4.80

Hi Guys,
Advice needed.
My mother received a service charge for an item she returned a few years ago. She didn't pay the service charge as she thought it was ludicrous. But now she has a default and the amount payable is £46.
I was going to speak to the company concerned to ask them:
1. why is there a service charge
2. can this be waived
3. can the default be cancelled as it now has a long term effect on her credit rating.
But I thought i'd post on here 1st to get any advice or past experiences on how to deal with this. I am willing to compromise and pay the original debt however.
Thanks for reading

What do the company's T&C's say regarding charges for returning items?0

Whether or not your mum though the charge was ludicrous means nothing, I'm afraid. She should have paid it and is now paying the price. I would imagine the Ts and Cs say she should have paid it at the time. Debts grow over time, so might be an idea just to pay this and get it over and done with, and learn from the mistake.
Unless of course the Ts and Cs are in your favour.Getting married to a wonderful lady on August 10, 2012.
