Unknowing underpayment of tax

I don't agree with chrismac1 very often but on this occasion I do. I don't understand why a P14 is not classed as information with HMRC but as they say "thems the rules"
OP if the employments go that far back can you check with your wife if she ever received coding notices for both jobs and did either employer get taken over during that time. I'm just thinking of possible reasons the underpayments were able to happen.
If she did receive coding notices in the earlier years then that would be an indication that HMRC were very much aware of the 2 employments. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
OP, just to say, I feel your pain. I got home tonight to a letter from HMRC asking me to pay £2,604 by 24th October!!!
This relates to the year 2010-11, when I was employed by a single employer, paying tax PAYE. I trusted our payroll dept and HMRC to get my tax right but I underpaid. I've never had a problem before.
I phoned HMRC and they say the bill is correct. They gave me the number for their Time to Pay helpline - 0845 308 8762 (open Mon-Fri 8am-8pm). They said I could call them and agree a repayment plan, and it would be interest free if I stuck to the terms agreed.
Gutted doesn't begin to cover it. Lesson learned, and I'll be checking my own tax in the future.

I would suggest posting the figures on here to get them checked rather than just accepting them.0
