Chutney suggestions?

Options
Hi,

I have some dried dates, raisins, cranberries and a few other suspicious looking fruit bags that I found when clearing out my cupboards earlier. I also have various nuts etc. I'm planning to chuck it all in a chutney, I have all the usual stuff like cider vinegar etc. What spices would you suggest I use?

I've always followed recipes before with chutney and never made one up, so would appreciate any wisdom! I am lucky to have a v well stocked spice cupboard, so open to pretty much any suggestions! If it makes any difference, I would like it to be ready at Christmas and it will be eaten with cheeses and pate.

Thanks

  • What about cinnamon, bit of chilli, cumin, maybe star anise to give it a Christmassy feel?

I usually stick to mixed spice and garlic if Im throwing a chutney together without a recipe.

I would recommend that you add this lot to something bulky and juicy otherwise the result will be very dry and rahter like rabbit droppings - vinegar and sugar both harden the skins on dried fruits.

Onions, apples, pears, plums, courgettes, marrows? Anything you can get free or very cheap.
