Self Employment Question

Hi, please can anyone give me any advice on the following?
My husband is thinking about contacting local businesses in regards to a service he can offer, will he need to register as self employed before offering the service or can he wait to see if he gets any business and then register as self employed?

You need to register within three months of setting up the business. I would strongly suggest doing what I did, taking advantage of an accountants offer of a free initial 30 minute discussion, and take along a written set of questions you want answers to. Might be worth you both going along.

Six years on and I'm so glad my books are all straight, no overdue tax/NI demands so I know where I stand. I even got a refund in year one, because of the equipment I bought.

Thanks for the reply and advice. So if we left it a couple of months before registering and he didn't manage to get any business would he still have to register?

HMRC prefer you to wait until you have got some actual work, assignments or sales before registering, as opposed to doing it on the off chance. They want you to show that you can actually make some money first. It would be easy to decide that you can, for example, trade on eBay then register only to find that the items will not sell.
