Tax Underpayment Letter

in Cutting tax
Hello all
I have received a letter from HMRC stating that I have not paid enough tax for the year 2010 / 2011.
The letter states that I had 2 jobs at the same time and that I was receiving the full allowance for each job and I now owe them £1140.20!
I did switch jobs in 2010 but never had 2 at the same time!
They claim that I earnt £24400 which i certainly didnt!
I have checked my bank statements and can see only 1 salary payment each month.
Im really worried as they re saying that they are going to start deducting this payment from April 2013 but Im about to start Maternity Leave and will be on SMP.
I have noticed that there was an issue in previous years due to a change in their systems and was wondering if the information they have on me could be incorrect. Also should they not have notified me of this before April 2012?
I get very confused over tax so I will be calling them but previous conversations I have had with them leave me with more questions than answers.
Thanks for any help.

This is quite common. Just on this site from memory there have been at least 6 previous posters who've had their income doubled by these twits. No commonsense programmed into their stupid system - how many PAYE people suddenly double their income? Less than 1 in 1,000 per tax year is my guess.
You may not get far with the monkeys on the phone, but it's worth a try. Follow it up with a letter pointing out the error of their ways. You are not alone - once they stop their silly errors I'll change the strapline on my posts - so that should be sometime around 2050 then!Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0 -
I have just called them and they have confirmed that they duplicated my income!
Its worrying that this can happen - I always presumed Mr taxman got it right! I will check from now on!0
