Best white bread flour?

I've always used Canadian Flour as it's what works for me but it doesn't work out the cheapest so am wondering what white bread flour people would recommend?
I tried Lidl's but wasn't impressed with the loaf it made but it did make lovely cinnamon whirls. I found the same with the Asda bread flour too. I've never tried the Sainsburys strong white bread flour, is it any good?

  • Sainsburys one is pretty good, Waitrose is the best though and they keep dropping the price slightly by a few pence every few months so it went from £1.29 to a mere 82p now, and its a very good quality flour better than the Canadian one I used to get in big sacks from costco IMHO. Waitrose Essentials are on a par with the regular ranges of other supermarkets and sometimes considerably higher quality than those ranges depending on the item. xx
  • I buy the canadian flour in bulk from Costco - about £11 to £12 for 16 kilos, so works out just slightly dearer than shops own brands, but a lot cheaper than the branded stuff like Hovis and Carrs.

I find it yields about 10% more than supermarket flour too.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I use the sainsburys one 77p per 1.5kg and it is great in the breadmaker....I am going to do an Ocado shop and try the Waitrose one too now :)
  • I buy the Allinsons 3kg one for £2 from Asda (and I think Tesco too). I prefer it to the Asda one, never had a dodgy loaf yet!
  • Thanks all! Asda's own brand bread flour is quite poor in my opinion, I use Allinsons wholemeal flour so I shall look out for that. Allinsons do a nice white seeded flour that I tend to use 50/50 with their wholemeal flour.
I haven't got a clue what costco is, is it a wholesale place where you need a card?
I don't have a Waitrose by mine but there is one near my mums so I'll stock up next time I'm down. Is their wholemeal flour any good?

I use Tesco brad flour, I find it quite good. 60 pence for 1.5 kg. In the same time I buy Holland&B seeds ( when really are in offer ) and mix in with wheat bran as well, and it turns beautifully :) The other day done a oat bread yummy!!!

I used to buy that one when we were costco members but I found it good for stuff like pizza bases, risen cakes, etc but not so good for regular bread, failing to rise properly on occasion and just not having the right texture. I did read on the marriage's website that it is designed really for slow rising and sourdough type breads so perhaps thats why

Yep their wholemeal bread flour is great too, as is their Duchy originals wholemeal plain flour, not tried the self raising one if they do sell it because I tend to prefer to add any raising agents manually as opposed to using SR flour xx
