Paralympics money saving: programmes, mascots

A couple of things we've learned going to the Olympic Park:

1. Yesterday they were giving away Olympic programmes free with the purchase of a Paralympic programme, however this did not appear to be at every programme stand. If you're planning to buy a programme, check to see if you can get a freebie.

2. If you are after a mascot, the cheapest we've seen them are at the Entertainer store in Westfield, not in the park itself. Please note that the Entertainer does not open on Sundays.

  • I was at the Park yesterday and the queues for both the megastores were huge and also, not moving when we walked past. I guess they just have a limit on how many people it is safe to have in them. So I would estimate a minimum half hour queue unless you head there at 8.30 am.
  • Also the GB t-shirts are £12 in the superstore in Hyde Park, reduced from £14. They’re still £16 in the Olympic Park. A lot of things are also reduced in the Hyde Park store (apart from the pins which all seem to be 3x£5 pins for £10. I think the water bottles were reduced too.

The Olympic pin of the day in the coca-cola store are reduced to £5 from £10 –both in Hyde/Olympic Park.
    :hello:
  • The shop at the olympic park had no queues at 11.00 this morning no special offers that i could see

no queue yesterday either (but it was at 9am) - inside they were doing a backpack back to school kit for £20, saving around £20 allegedly on buying all the 4 or 5 items included individually.

Sports direct still has discounted t-shirts left, flags, and a few other bits and bobs. John Lewis in Cambridge had a TON of stuff, but all full price. Not much left in our local Sainsbury's they had obviously cleared out with some reductions. Got some sweatbands 99p at WH Smith, and Clintons had a few bits in their clearance section too.

I managed to leave the Olympic Park without buying anything - I'm being MSE and making my own scrapbook with pictures and newspaper cuttings.....it was really tempting to get the programmes at that special offer but I just know I will just never look at them.
The shop was massive, really enjoyed looking around, had pics taken with the mascot statues and there was a member of the GB squad there having her pics taken with visitors (shame on me I can't remember her name, she was a weight lifter I think!)

There was no queue around midday but then when the Stadium kicked out the whole park was RAMMED!!!

If anyone has a day ticket that allows you entry to several events, pick the one you want and get there early - most of them were full up with people queuing to get in.
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!
  • We had a look around the shop in the outdoor part of Westfield today and the selection seemed a lot more limited than during the Olympics. The best deal was buy one get one free on caps.

Not sure that all programme sellers are offering this but in the Aquatic Centre buying the main Paralympics programme for £10 also got you the main Olympics programme thrown in for free.

On the way out of the swimming this evening there were some people directing us to the souvenier shop (not the megastore, they said "not the megastore!"), to get 3 toys for £10 instead of £7 each.
    :)
  • The Sainsburys just inside the old Stratford shopping mall (opposite the station on the non-Westfield side) is selling off quite a few things at 50-70% off. Items included Mandeville, the Union Jack Wenlock, flags and t-shirts for 0-8 years old.

If anyone is interested, the autographed memorabilia was on special yesterday. Essentially photographs signed by previous and current Olympians. This is in the two stores in the Olympic Park.
