In a horrible muddle over completing tax form P50.

Not having the best of days :embarasse

I received some back pay in this tax year for a job that ended at the end of Feb 2012.

But since that job ended in Feb I worked in another job which started in this tax year and finished over 4 weeks ago.

I overpaid tax in the job that ended in Feb 12 so HMRC sent me a P50 during the second job.

During the 4 week period since the end of the second job, I've not signed on the dole.

This P50 form asks 'your income since leaving your last employment'.

So is this the job that ended in Feb or the second job that ended over 4 weeks ago?!:o

It is irrelevant that the 'first job' ended in February - the fact is that you have received money from that source in this tax year.

I would complete the P50 and attach both forms P45 from each of the two jobs (you should ask the first employer for a P45 in respect of this tax year also). A covering letter would also not do any harm.

So which job do I put down on the form?!

I've got the P45 for the most recent job but the P45 (parts 2 & 3) for the previous job was sent to the new employer.

I'm a bit wary of attaching the originals of parts 2 and 3 for my most recent job because what happens if an agency rings tomorrow and I've not got a P45 (yes I could complete a P60 but if it's the same agency that found me the last job it could look a bit odd if I've not got the P45 they sent me).

Would a photocopy of the most recent P45 be acceptable to HMRC?

Yes - but you received money from your earllier job in this tax year - you should receive either another P45 or at least a statement of earnings in this tax year (even though the payment related to another tax year).

You MUST send in the original P45 as HMRC will be sending you an amended one with the tax reduced by the potential refund.

Thanks for the quick reply (again).

I've not received another P45 from that job that ended in Feb nor a statement of earnings.

And that's the job I put down on the form?

OK - in order to eliminate confusion if that is possible - complete P50 using details from the P45 that you have but point out in a letter that you have received arrears of pay from a former employer and provide evidence of this. I would presume that this was also taxed and a further refund could be due.

But have you had any income "since leaving your last employment"? (company B)

Or are you saying that the arrears from company A (which you left in February 2012) were received after you left company B four weeks ago?

Did you receive a letter showing the arrears and any tax paid?

    Thanks for those replies.

I'm owed money on the back pay from Company A (overpaid tax).

This back pay was received at the end of May 2012 whilst I was working for Company B (which began Apr 12 after start of tax year)

I contacted HMRC about the overpaid tax from Company A in July and they sent me a P50.

I've had no income since leaving company B in early August (over 4 weeks ago).

The back pay with the overpaid tax is from Company A.

It looks as though you will have to complete the P50 with details of company B and send a covering letter concerning the payment from company A - presumably company A sent some form of payslip with the arrears?
