Hi Jax,
If you list the items on free listing days, then you are not charged any fees even if the item doesn't get sold.
But if you are listing otherwise, then there is insertion fee for above £1 of starting price (99p start are still free;)). So even if your item is not sold, you still be charged insertion fee.
So better to stick to free listing days (which is going to be this week end) to avoid any insertion fee..;)
