Griddle Pan

Hi all,

I bought a really expensive and really good iron griddle pan, I used it for the first time yesterday and my OH thought he was being good by putting the dishes in the dishwasher except it's all rusty  it wasn't the cheapest thing I've ever bought does anyone have any ideas on how to get the rust off? :D

There is some excellent advice here on how to deal with a rusty cast iron pan. Basically, it needs scrubbing and then re-seasoning!

I do hope you persevere with it though. A properly seasoned cast iron griddle with its own built up patina is a brilliant thing to cook on.

yes - I would just scrub it thoroughly to get rust off then re-season it. then teach hubby to just wipe it with kitchen towel before storing it. never ever wash it!
my mum inherited a bakestone off her mum and I can say that for at least 75 years that stone has never been washed! and it makes the most fabulous welshcakes!

Reseason by oiling and heating - either on the hob or in an oven - then wipe with a damp cloth - I usally put mine back on the hob for a min or 2 to make sure its dry and burn off any residues

Scrub it then reseal it by coating it in its entirety with oil and baking it in the oven for an hour at 150C. Leave it overnight to cool.

  • Quick tip: don't let anyone else wash it up, unless they're trainable! (Or cast iron frying pans, or dutch ovens, or carbon-steel woks.) My DH knows not to touch them now; his idea of washing up is to slather everything with a solid layer of bubbles, which shouldn't be rinsed off or they won't have time to work. His mother taught him to "wash up properly", and he thinks I'm a terrible slob for not using lashings of detergent on them, but he knows to leave my griddle & other iron utensils well alone now!
