Hi Guys, have my MOT coming up soon and have been told by ATS whilst getting brakes fitted that the expansion chamber of my exhaust is a bit loose. They said I can get a solid piece of exhaust welded on to replace this section. So a few questions really, anyone ever had this work carried out, if so how much did it cost and any recommendations to do the work, particularly anywhere from balmoral up to Lisburn? Will this even show up when they do the emission tests on my car and if unsure any idea if I can get emissions tested before actual test? Many many thanks as ususal guys..

You will need to clarify what is actually wrong. If it is a bit loose does it need a bracket welded on? If it is actually a hole in the exhaust then I would not waste time and money getting it repaired but get a new section fitted. In any case your mechanic should be able to help.
If you don't have one try

Thanks Dave, the guy at ATS showed it to me and it looked like a bagpipe to be honest, he said it was the expansion chamber which is made to expand slightly but had become streched, if thay makes any sense. It was in with Ford recently and they said I would need a whole new exhaust to the tune of £800 odd quid, due to the manifold being loose? Cheers..0

Cautionary tale here.....A couple years ago my cataliser came off & I took it into a local garage to get welded. All was good until Feb this year when the weld failed completely. Now I had to get the weld patched a few times after the main welding.
I had set aside £90 for the new cat to be fitted but in the end,I had to get not only the cat replaced, but also the front downpipe & the back pipe as well,as the garage had cut a couple inches out of each & bunged a smaller diameter pipe up each end of the cat to weld to.
It cost me £140 for the three sections.Thankfully the chap who did the work in Feb was a friend & only charged me for parts, with labor it'd be much more.
All in I must've paid the guts of £250 odd quid on the exhaust,so a weld may be more expansive in the long run.0 -
My exhaust started rattling a few months ago & i thought it was going to fall off. I was panicking because the MOT was coming up too.
Took it to Dee's Exhausts in Newtownabbey (near B&Q). Cost me £40 to put a new bracket on & replace the tail pipe which had rusted. Could ring them for advice/price Te: 908003010 -
How much do you think a whole new exhaust would set me back? 2005 focus..thanks.0

This sounds like the expansion "joint" not "chamber" which is usually quite close to the engine manifold or attached to it. It is a length of corrugated pipe maybe 4 or 5 inches long. If it has stretched it was possibibly as a result of a failure elsewhere and that needs to be addressed as well. Have they showed you the part on the exhaust diagram?0

He showed me that it was near the back of the joint, as you look car face on. Will Mot emissions test pick this up? Thanks.0

A while ago my car had a hole or blowout in the exhaust ( not sure what but it sounded like a tractor).
A friend who knows about cars told me the problem was in a section that could be replaced and it wasn't a major problem, said it sounded worse than it was.
Took it to kiwk fit in Lisburn, advised I would need a whole exhaust, the section wasn't available and said the exhaust on my car didn't correspond with the database so it was a case of 'the computer says no'! Minimum it would cost from kwikfit was £380.00. Said thanks but no thanks, drove around the road to Lagan motor factors ( just across and up a bit from train station), strangely the part I needed was on their database and would be £43.00 + vat. Ordered it, took it to a mechanic and all fixed for a fraction of the £380 minimum I was quoted. I liked the way they said minimum.... Basically they can charge what they like then.
Use an independent garage / mechanic. My mechanic isnt working at present due to illness otherwise I'd give you his number.
Give Lagan motor factors a ring tomorrow and they would probably be able to give you a quote or an idea of price.0 -
