Experto Credit have pulled a fast one!

Hi all I hope someone can help. My father was in debit and owed a company £14300. The company had instructed Experto Credit to claim the money. Owing to the stress it was causing him (only has a couple of years to live due to long term illness) I decided to pay as much of it off as possible.
I spoke via telephone to an Experto Credit agent and offered a final settlement figure of £7800. He stated he would call the company concerned and ring me back. He rang me back and informed me the company would accept payment as final settlement.
I paid the agreed amount over one credit and one debit card and made sure that it was final settlement with no other fees attached.
I have now received a letter which states I owe them the final £6504.30 even though I have just paid the final settlement figure.
I have contacted the banks and they have paid the company.
I am now at a loss as to what to do as this sneaky company has tricked me into parting with £7800 in the that it was final settlement.
Could anyone advise me if I can do anything about this
Thanks.
G.

Did you ask the company to send you confirmation of the final settlement amount by post first and then confirmation afterwards that it was paid ? if not then it may be a case of your word against theirs.
Do they record their incoming telephone calls?
have you contacted them for an explanation?Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
I don't know if they record incoming phone calls. I was a bit stupied in that once the final settlement was agreed over the phone, I paid it. Nothing written was ever sent.
I have tried to contact them over the phone but no one is picking up. I will call them on Monday.Keep smiling, G.0 -
I thought that because they got my money by misleading me that I would be protected by the banks.Keep smiling, G.0

What I mean't is that I agreed to pay them on the basis that it was final settlement. Had it not been the case, then i would not have paid.Keep smiling, G.0

Well legally they have done nothing wrong (morally well that's another question) - the facts are that your father owed £x and you paid approx half with the term full and final settlement. This has no recourse in law.
You could pay off half your debts saying full and final settlement- they can bank your cheque and still come after you for any legitimate sum outstanding.
Sorry this is not what you wanted to hear but the banks are no way going to compensate or refund you for this.0 -
if your father had paid them half they could have chased them for the rest. As you, not the original debtor, made the payment, the situation is different. They accepted the money in F&F payment, so that has to be it. Shame its not in writing though.
