Thermal Curtains

I've been thinking about fitting thermal/Heavier curtains and have been reading up about the best types.

I have wrought iron curtain rails which make the curtains hang about
3 inches from the surrounding wall....is there any point fitting heavier curtains on these rails with such a gap that heat could escape through?

If the curtains drop all the way to the floor, it will make a big difference. We tend to tuck our curtains onto the window sill, but as our radiator rests just below the sill (which I think is daft), it makes sense for us to do so in order to stop heat escaping.

Thanks....I have storage heaters below most of the windows. There is about 2.5 inches of overlap all the way round between curtains and edge of windows. There is about 8 inches between storage heaters and curtains.
