Allowances for working from home.

Hi,
I have to work from home as my employer does not have an office. Are there any allowances that I can claim?
Also, as I rent my home and need a locked room for my home office (as I have confidential files) can I claim tax back on the extra rent that I have to pay as I need an extra room?
Other costs that I have are telephone and broadband costs (wouldn't have them normally as I have a smartphone on contract). I also had to buy the desk and chair.
What about the extra light and heat costs (as I am the only one at home during the day)?
Thanks,
Z

You mention an employer: are you definitely on PAYE? There is a big difference between what an employee can claim and the options for self employed people.
This is because employers normally give you everything you need to do the job. If you have additional expenses, they normally reimburse you if you have a receipt, or they may give you a higher salary to cover some costs.
If you are an employee and your contract of employment states that your main place of work is your home address, there is a flat rate of £4 per week or £18 per month that you can claim "no questions asked".Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Hi Thanks for your reply,
Yes I am on PAYE and a full time employee.
To clarify the company has offices, it just does not have desks for all employees as the HO is in Brum and it has staff around the country so we have to work from home.

I thought it was £4.00 per week.PlutoinCapricorn wrote: »If you are an employee and your contract of employment states that your main place of work is your home address, there is a flat rate of £5 per week that you can claim "no questions asked".

Yes, that’s it unless you want to make your own fully detailed claim. If you are considering that take a look at the link I posted above and the next page. So, if you are on PAYE, is that flat allowance it?
