I must admit I wash meat and fish before I use them but don't know why. Nobody else at home does it so I don't know where I pick it up.

My mum always does. And I bet Gran did as well:D

Me? Vegetarian so just scrubbing pesticides off me veggies:rotfl:

  • Step mother does but I never have, I have also read that you spread bacteria around the sink & surround if you wash it.

I know some people who wash meat with vinegar, I defrost in a bowl with hot water so perhaps I should stop doing that.

Mother used to braise meat with a splash of vinegar. Its supposed to tenderise the meat but no, i dont wash the meat before cooking it.

  • Current advice can be found on Food Standards Agency Website but to summarise their advice is not to wash the meat but to wash your hands after handling.

I have always rinsed mine before use, and especially gutted fish like mackerel as I find the in store preparation often leaves some gutty bits inside

I do rinse the inside of chicken - it isnt ALWAYS cleaned properly and no-one wants chickensh!t with thier dinner. apart from that I tend to just pat the meat dry with paper towels.
I have never been affected with salmonella by doing this.
  • Apart from mince, I soak all my meat with a mixture of vinegar or lemon juice and water for 5 minutes and then wash it.
  • please never thaw meat in hot water, if in a hurry always thaw in a big pot of cold water. Nowadays you can cook beef/mice from frozen but always thaw pork and poultry carefully.
btw I don't bother washing meat these days but always wash handss carefully after handling it - yeuch!
    xx
