Hand washing clothes with normal powder

Is it safe to hand wash some clothes with normal washing powder?

Washer broken and don't really want to go out and buy hand wash powder if I don't need to.

Thanks.

Yes, don't use as much powder, make sure it has dissolved properly.

Use gloves to protect your hands.

    Rinse the clothes well.

Many powders have a handwashing instruction on the packs. :D

Put your powder in a washed out milk bottle with hot water (doesn't need to be boiling, tap hot will be fine) and shake it till completely dissolved before you use it for washing. You'll need less than you think, a level tablespoonful of powder in a pint of water will do at least two kitchen sink fulls of laundry. Use gloves as has been said, washing powder is very rough on skin. Rinse at least twice. Use a small splash of vinegar in the final rinse, it helps neutralise any lingering alkali that may damage clothes.

TBH though any detergent will do for most clothes, like washing up liquid or even shampoo/body wash. In France you can buy one detergent that can be used for clothes, dishes and washing your floors!

In England I call this Stardrops ;). Used in different strengths of course, amazingly versatile when you've run out of the appropriate cleaning material. Instructions for hand-care strictly followed as above, of course.
  • Thanks, I'll be doing some hand washing of clothes for the first time tomorrow. Just need a new washing machine. :(

Ive just bought a Beko for not much over £200. I am well impressed, quiet in the kitchen, does just what is says on the tin. Digital display, lots of programmes, hand wash, boil wash, quick wash. Brilliant.

Beko Model No 71642 W from Comet but do shop around.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I wouldn't have ever thought there was a formula for this, I hand washed everything for two years when we didn't have a machine. In the bath, chuck in some powder, let it soak a bit, rub it on its self until it was clean then refill the bath and start again until it isn't soapy. The hardest part was wringing them out, tears your nails from your finger pads, don't over do it the first few times, it hurts.

Great tip about dissolving the powder first.

Have to say I hand wash everything except towels and bedclothes. On my own though, so it's not for everyone.

I use whatever liquid wash is on offer and dilute it. For undies I leave them soaking in v hot water for a while with a teeny drop of nicely fragranced Zoflora, and then hand wash. Vanish stain remover is your friend too when hand washing, read the label.

I then put handwashed clothes on the rinse and spin cyclein the machine. It is all so quick compared to a wash cycle!

I hate waiting for the machine to finish when it's towels or sheets day!

It works fine, most powders have instructions telling you how to use it for hand washing. However, I found the hand wash powder rinses out a lot easier.
