Can I do it......cake decorating?

I'd very much like to make my babies first birthday cake. But can I, having never made anything other than fairy cakes, make something half decent. How easy is ready roll icing to do? What about piped butter cream. Are the letter molds you can buy straightforward to use. I don't want to create anything too complicated just a simple design.
Cakes are so cheap to buy I don't want to waste hours and money if I have no hope of doing it. I have watched youtube clips but they generally make it look ok.
Advice appreciated.

Yes just don't be too ambitious. my daughters first birthday cake was the tellytubby house which was basically a cake made in a ceramic bowl and covered in ready roll icing. I then made the door and the tubbies out of the spare icing.0

hi mr knight, may i divert you to the home made cakes thread? There are some lovely people on there that can help with any questions you have, I am self taught and I find it pretty easy. Once you've got the technique right its pretty straight forward

Go ahead and give it a go, I'm sure that a cake made with love however it turns out will be better received than a perfect shop bought one anyday...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Having a child that's lactose intolerant I had to learn to make cakes myself. Unfortunately, I'm not very artistic and about the only thing I can draw is clowns. So his first bday cake was a clown face, which was very easy to cut out of RTR Icing. I have got a wee bit better over the years though
