Save the 10% tax band

in Cutting tax
There are two new petitions on the Downing Street website:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/10percenttax/
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Savethe10pcband/
If you remember the road charging petition - nearly 2 million signatures - it must be worth taking a little time to sign, even if it doesn't affect you.
Two petitions? Is this divide and rule?
Cheers, Dave

Please will someone sign my petition:
Its about having no more petitions. If we get enough people to sign it we may be able to convince Martin Lewis to have no more petitions on his site!0 -
Signed both.To be happy you need to make someone happy.0

I'm not going to sign it. I'd rather he raised the personal tax allowance - raising it by £1100 would be enough to cancel out the effect. The 10% band was one of Brown's gimmicks in the 1st place!0

Good point. It seems the media forgot to mention this point.I'd rather he raised the personal tax allowance - raising it by £1100 would be enough to cancel out the effect. The 10% band was one of Brown's gimmicks in the 1st place!

Signed both but doubtful if it will have any affect. If by some miracle he did decide to reinstate it he would just tax us somewhere else to allow him to balance his books.0

Any tax change is likely to have winners and losers - the problem with this one is that the losers are generally on low incomes. However it would IMO be better to raise the personal allowance than preserve the 10pc band. The door is open for this to happen, the next budget could include this change. I would advise people to write to their MP, this should have more impact than a petition.0

I have written to my M.P. and the Treasury regarding the abolition of the 10% Tax Band, and sent a copy of my e-mail (to the Treasury) to Jeff Prestridge of The Mail on Sunday. My M.P. gave me a standard "Conservative" reply while the Treasury and Jeff Prestridge have not even bothered to reply. It amazes me that the Financial Press has not "highlighted" this THEFT from the low paid.
The problem with increasing the Personal Allowances (a solution EXIL put forward) from the Treasury's point of view, is that everyone will benefit. By abolishing the 10% Band only a small number of people (those on low incomes and not in receipt of Tax or Pension credits) will be affected. It is wrong and makes a mockery of our Tax System which is supposed to be equitable. I have signed both Downing Street petitions but the numbers are so small they are not likely to have any affect.0
