New job and emergency tax code

I started my new job at the beginning of the month and just got paid today. However, I have been overtaxed as I am on an emergency tax code (0T M1). I realise this is because my employer did not request a p45 or get me to fill in a p46.

Do I contact HMRC to fix this? Or should I take my p45 in to work on Monday and hope they will have my tax code sorted in time for next pay day?

And advice would be appreciated.

Did not request a P45? It's for you to hand one in and take responsibilty or sign a P46.

Hand it in now would be a good idea.

It's your responisbility really to give them the paperwork. If you give them the P45 now they can sort it out and overpaid tax will come back to you in your next pay.

I just graduated in June and haven't actually worked since July 2011. It wasn't easy trying to get a p45 from my old work. And I did suggest the P46 but my manager said she would get back to me. So I did take responsibility.

You suggested it but then didn't follow up...

If your P45 is from July 11 then it's useless. The purpose of a P45 is to tell your new employer how much you have earned in the current tax year.

Get a P46 filled in ASAP, and tick either box A or box B depending on whether you've been receiving jobseekers. You can find a P46 here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p46.pdf

In that case I would be inclined not to use the P45 as this will only get you onto emergency tax on a month 1 basis (what you are on at the moment is not emergency tax it is a code used when emergency tax cannot be used). Fill in a P46 and hopefully you can complete declaration A and you can then be put onto the emergency tax code on a cumulative basis, which will priberbly be thr correct code for you. If you have to use declaration B then you will be on emergency tax on a month 1 basis anyway untill the tax office advise a cumulative code to your employer.

Ah right ok. Thanks for that!
