P.45 not passed on to Head Office

I handed in my P.45 to my new employer and I took a copy. No-one seemed to know where it had been put so I copied my copy and took that in as I wanted my tax code to be right. (Is a copy of my P.45 Part 2/3 not acceptable for the employer as I still have my copy).

I got paid today and knew how much I was expecting and it wasnt enough. Nipped and got my wage slip and the tax code is "ot" and I have paid tax.

Manager No.2 rang head office and they never received an original P.45 or a copy so they are sending out a P.46.

When this P.46 is completed, will it all get sorted out and I will have the correct tax code of 810L. (I have retained Part 1A for my records, could that be of any use to the employer).

Having worked at this place for approximately 7 weeks, I realise now that I should have posted the P.45 myself to Head Office then I would know it had been sent.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Nothing wrong with handng the employer part of the p45 to the employer, yours just seems to have lost it. Yes when you use a p46 it should sort itself out. Not sure about the copy of the p45 question being acceptable.

Your new employer is only allowed to use the details from your P45 if they have the original parts 2 and 3 of the P45. They are not permitted to use any details from part1A or from any copies of parts 2 and 3. You are I am afraid going to have to follow the P46 route.

Once you have completed the P46 and your new employer's wages office have it you will be put onto the emergency tax code (810L) and this will be applied on month 1 basis, I am assuming that you are paid monthly. This means that each month you will be allowed about £675 before any tax is paid. The P46 will be used to advise the tax office that you have started with your new employer and in due course the tax office will advise them of your P45 details, ie the tax code which will be the same as the emergency code, along with the taxable gross and tax paid figures. Without knowing the full figures I cannot tell if you will have overpaid or underpaid tax when the figures come from the tax office but whichever the case this will then be adjusted in your next payday after the figures are applied.
