Tesco - do they offer 2x the 'error' when refunding?

I was refunded twice the difference yesterday at Tescos. Just wondering if I got lucky and the suit made a mistake, or if it's their policy.
I did a big shop yesterday at my local Tesco and saw a special display like a pyramid of BOGOF on Colgate Total Whitening (my preferred choice). So, being a MSE I grabbed a couple and continued with the shop. When I checked the receipt just after the checkout it went through as "offer 2 for £5 - £0.98", so I'd been overcharged by £2.01 (as they were individually priced at £2.99 so the £5.98 became £5.00 but it should have been £2.99 as it's BOGOF).
The suit guy disappeared to check the deal, came back saying it's "2 for £5" and I showed him the special display where they were stacked up in a pyramid at BOGOF. There was also a display with the same product at "buy 2 for £5". Obviously some kind of crossover between deals.
Anyway, I was expecting my £2.01 but he refunded me £4.02!
Is that normal, ie do Tesco, feeling slightly sheepish, refund twice the value of their !!!!-up?

Yes its double the difference and its normal. Some canny shoppers search these out to gain from the deal. Think the last big one that people were taking advantage of was pork loin joints. Sure there will be another one along soon.0

so the two tubes cost you £1?Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.0
