My switch to EDF - Are the cards starting to tumble?

I posted on a previous thread asking about whether or not to switch to EDF. I said on that thread that everything was ok with my switch application, but I would let everyone know if the cards come tumbling down.

I may be a little premature with this thread, but I fear those cards may be starting to tumble :(

I applied for the switch about a month ago and was on schedule for my electricity to switch over tomorrow, 30 August 2012. The gas for some reason was scheduled for 07 September 2012 but I could live with that. Many suppliers often switch the two supplies on slightly different dates.

However, as I said, the electric was scheduled for a switch tomorrow, 30-Aug-2012, but I haven't been asked to supply a meter reading yet, and so I have just checked online with the progress. Yes, the electric switch appears to be a little further ahead than the gas and I'm now up to the point where it says:
Nearly there

Your contract is almost registered. There are just a few meter reading details we need to sort out. If you haven’t heard from us already, we’ll be in touch soon about these. Not long now.

I looked under the 'submit meter reading' part of the site but it doesn't look like the electric metering is fully set up yet. There are two registers (I'm on E7) but it doesn't identify which is which yet.
(The gas is not set up at all yet, but there's another week for that)

Oh well, I thought maybe it will all be sorted out tomorrow.
Then I looked again.

Without any warning or notification, I see the scheduled date for the electric switch has now been pushed back another month!
It now says the switch is not scheduled to happen until 29 September 2012.

I'll keep an eye on what happens to the gas, but things are not looking too hopeful...

This exact thing happened to me but my switch went through as scheduled on the original date. Just some weird computer glitch... My online thing didn't identity the readings either so I called up to give them to make sure they were the right way round.

Had the same thing with EDF. When I entered the reading online it didn't appear on their system until they looked for it (only after I prompted them). I also found that the updates they give you online and the dates are wrong too. They tried to blame me, and said I should have phoned the readings through, even though their email asked me to do it online. Typical EDF!!

    Thanks for the comments.

This morning I see they have sent me an email which states the electricity will actually come on supply on 03 September 2012 :)
(although MyAccount online still says 29 September 2012)

They have asked for meter readings within 5 days of this date, but I'm not confident they will get it right if I use the online facility as the registry details are still missing. I think I'll probably take the other option they gave me and phone through the readings on 0800 056 2055.
  • after a lot of thought i am leaving B Gs to EDF blue. I will be charged 30.00 per supply as i am on online saver 12, which finishes on 29.09.12, so am i assuming correctly that if it takes over 4 weeks to connect, my leaving date fines will be passed, so no fine.

    You're cutting it fine.
The switch may take as little as 28 days.
If I were in your position, I'd wait until Monday before applying :)

Problem with that is will EDF bump the price before Monday .
They are taking on that many new customers they might well increase the tariff . Might be worth talking to an adviser re swap date i did and they checked my BG PP2012 contract and said no penalty to pay . With that and the fact that BG have given me notice of contract end and new prices i changed to EDF . Prepared to take BG on if any charge due to the fact that i am only giving reasonable notice of 5 weeks .

21 days after the end of the cooling off period. However, your switch date is earlier than this as the 21 days includes all processing which has many communications with sequential steps.

Once the cooling off period expires, they can send a request with the proposed date. This has to give an objection window for the old supplier (commonly 5 working days), plus it goes to the distributor who passes it onto your old supplier which can add a few days of processing time.

However, your switch date could be right after this so you need to calculate when its safe based on this.

If the proposed switch date changes it means either:

    - the new supplier has made an error in their application and the distributor rejected it, which means a new request has to be sent.

    - the old supplier objected but the objection was an error but the new supplier was not made aware until after the time to resolve it elapsed hence it became a confirmed objection. The new supplier then had to resubmit their request.

There is no such computer error excuse for the switch date moving as its all based on data flows sent. The only way it could be a computer error is if its internal to the new supplier in that your website view didn't match their registration systems view.

So, suggest you ask them what happened. The above has an audit trail as its all data flows which pass between the distributor. If the error causes you to pay more, you can complain to get it reimbursed.
