i have been working in the same job for 4 years now, 2 years ago a got a pay rise of 100 extra per month (lucky me eh?)
anyway.. just happened to check a few of my payslips and im a tad confused.. my basic pay hasnt changed a penny in the last 2 years and neither have my hours.. both exactly the same.. this is before any deductions...
however ive noticed that sometimes i have different amounts of income tax and national insurance taken out of each months pay.. im not really clued into the whole accountancy thing but i assumed that if my hours and pay was the same every month then surely my income tax and national insurance payments would stay the same? can anyone shed some light to a highly confused forum member?

I think it's because they are paid on a weekly basis and you will sometimes have 5 tax weeks in pay period and sometimes 40

Was you pay rise confirmed in writing?
I would excpect your basic pay to have increased (unlesss the pay rise was bonus related).
Time for a chat with manager, but beforehand collect evidence of your rise.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

Tax often varies a little bit due to the way it is worked out but NI should not vary if on the same amount during the same year and assuming no changes that might affect it like joining a pension scheme. To see what is happening can you give a few examples showing the gross tax and NI for say a four month period. Also include tax code and NI basis (proberbly A or D and usualy shows on payslip) and the date of payment.0 -

2 years ago you got a pay rise of £100 a month? You are now looking back at payslips dating back two years and the salary never went up? Is that what you are saying?0 -
You should have noticed it earlier re the pay rise not showing. Do you have anything in writing about the pay rise ?0

no people are getting the wrong idea... im not disputing the pay rise.. im disputing that my hours worked and basic pay have not changed one bit in 2 years but on different months i get charged different amounts of income tax and national insurance...
example march payslip basic pay 1075 before deductions
income tax 90.45
national insurance 56.76
aug payslip basic pay 1075 before deductions
income tax 69.80
national insurance 46.960 -

In what way does this constitute a £100 a month pay rise then?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
How big is the difference? How often are you paid? 12 equal payments or as suggested 4 weeks then 5 weeks?chrisni1986 wrote: »no people are getting the wrong idea... im not disputing the pay rise.. im disputing that my hours worked and basic pay have not changed one bit in 2 years but on different months i get charged different amounts of income tax and national insurance...
Is the gross pay on each payslip the same?0 -

right so your salary which is now 1200 more a year is divided by 12 and you get gross 1075 each month BEFORE tax and NI , yes?chrisni1986 wrote: »not sure what you mean but basically my boss gave me the rise because id been there 2 years but as i said thats not where my confusion lies
gross is the same on every payslip 1075 and im paid monthly every 26th
So give us some exmapled month by month of what you are paying tax an ni over 3 months?0
