Travelling out of London, money saving tips!

Hi All

Wonder if you can help, live in London. I am from up north and often have to make visits up for family events/friends birthdays. I wondered if you have any tips for saving travel costs.

There is usually myself and my Bf travelling trains end up costing 100-150 for the pair of us (bearing in mind I have a rail card and we always travel off peak and book ahead)

I am considering a hire car (whip car, easy car) but wonder if this would actually save money?

    Hello,

Have you tried looking at buses? Just done a quick search on Megabus, London to Newcastle on Friday 14th Sep returning on Monday 17th Sep is £54 for two people (never used them so don't know about service or other charges). Might take a bit longer but is certainly cheaper.

I have done buses to Notts which was just about manageable but its a LONG way, we both work full time so most of the weekend would be spent on a bus to York (the other area we visit)so it probably isnt too practical. Doh.

I'd also try Mega Train. You can access it throught he mega bus website but on some trips you can choose to go by train or bus. I use mega train to get home from London to the south coast quite a lot - they don't run on sundays which is a bit of a bore but i've had one way trips for £5 before.

The train is just normally one carriage on a normal service so no special trains etc. It does depend on where you are going though - for me to get to my parents house i can only get the mega train as they do not do a bus service down there
