    Re Apricots I have a huge tin of apricots that I bought in a mad moment at the local Family Bargains shop a few months ago for 99P

    I think its a catering sized tin :):):) as yet I haven't opened it .

    Now here's my question,If I open it and drain do you think I could freeze into smaller portions of a reasonable size as I live alone and seemingly (as I found out afterwards )I am the only one who actually likes apricots :):):)

    If frozen I could then use them up for myself in various ways. I don't eat bread at all so no good me making jam, but I do like some of the other ideas.

    This whopping great tin is just sitting on the shelf of my larder and every time I open the door I see it and think 'What on earth possessed me to buy it' :):):) (oh yes the 99P price tag I think )

    If I open them I will be eating apricots for a fortnight otherwise :):):)

    i would think that the apricots would freeze ok but have never tried it....they do puree very well so could you mix them in with something people do like and make a pie or crumble ? or chuck some in a smoothie where they are invisible....i have done the same myself but normally with massive tins of tomatoes...too much of a bargain to miss

  • Jackie it should be fine to open and portion up and re-freeze. I've done it with other tinned fruit. Might also be nice on yogurt.

    Thanks chums I will give it a go as I am beginning to get haunted by the walloping great tin every time I open the larder door its just sitting there and to be honest I could do with the space. I may if I can, squeeze some room in the freezer and get some plain vanilla ice cream and add some chopped up apricots to that, then freeze again, or better still use some ice cream in smaller containers (those small take away boxes) which will stack better in the freezer and beat some of the fruit in, and refreeze in smaller portions.

    I adore crumbles and pies but tbh I don't think I have the space for them at the moment. But the big tin is going to have to go :):):).

    My next door neighbour has two little girls I may ask her if they would like some in ice cream for the freezer.

    Had gammon yesterday and had loads left so we had DH's fave tonight

    Bacon ala Caz

    Chopped gammon.
    Mixed diced or sliced Peppers.
    Handful sweetcorn.
    Quartered mushrooms.
    ½ a red onion sliced and sauteed until translucent.

    Sauce

    8 tbsps Mayo.
    2 tsps mustard.
    200ml Milk
    .
    Mix sauce ingredients together in a large pan or wok then sautee the onion and add other vegetables then add to the sauce with the leftover gammon and warm through gently until hot.

    Serve with pasta

    Do you realise that if you lived in the 19th century then your food costs would be three times that of your rent. So sad to see it reverse in now that our rent is often at least three times what we spend on food.

    If we we're to follow this thread's example, then to spend £20 a week on food would mean we paid approx £6-£7 a week in rent in old days. How does that compare with today's rental values and food prices?

    So if we maintained similar equation we'd spend much more on quality food and ingredients. None of this processed rubbish.

    ETA I've actually got an annual budget from 1850s to prove what I'm saying. Just not entire.y sure how to portray it..
  • Feral Moon I know where you are coming from, but the sad truth is that the cost to buy has outstripped wage rises. That coupled with lack of rent controls means that we are moving back to before the first world war. Poverty, starvation and early death was a way of life in those days. it wasn't until they needed [STRIKE]gun fodder[/STRIKE] soldiers, that the PTB realised that many were not fit enough to fight.

    The fact that workers wages are now stagnant at 1980's levels is a disgrace.
    Globalism has caused an economic disparity that we may never come out of in my lifetime :(

    B/B you are right, sadly the thing that always seems to boost the economy is a war,even though it cuts the population.
