Sliced thinly, food goes a long way.
When we were really struggling in the early 80's I used to get a chicken carcass from my local butcher for 20p and made a misers chicken noodle soup using chicken stock, a few bits of chicken that was on the carcass, half an onion, sweetcorn and torn up cheap spaghetti.
I also used to get beef bones from him and use them to make beef stock, I still do this because beef rarely comes on the bone these days.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I had to post, as I just choked on my tea reading a comment on here.
You do realise one of the main reason health costs are soaring is the complete opposite of what you said don't you? Because people are eating so much more than they used to so are obese? And it's no wonder if they are eating whole packs of egg noodles in one sitting to themselves.Mum of 2 monkey. 4 yrs and 2 yrs :j

@Feral Moon - I wouldn't call it a meal either and I've tried saying that it's not very much before and the posts in reply tell me that I'm eating far too much myself. I'm 6 foot tall average build - not overweight at all 34 inch waist - and moderately active walking several miles per day. I don't own a car so walk everywhere. I also need more than that....saying that though you can get some good ideas from the posts on here. Don't worry if it doesn't look realistic just make a meal plan for your own family and never mind anyone else.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

A pack usually contains two servings to which you would then add vegetables, meat or fish and a sauce of some kind to make a meal So it's hardly beyond the realms of possibility that a person could or would consume an entire pack if they just wanted to eat the noodles alone and hardly going to cause obesity at around 250 calories per pack! :rotfl:
As I said before, a quarter pack (which is a half portion) to feed FOUR adults is completely unrealistic especially considering the extras added were just half a pepper, a couple of spring onions, a few mushrooms and some pickings off a chicken carcass. So probably a total of 50 calories per meal, if that, hence my comment regarding malnutrition! My two year old grandson would need more than that!0 -
Noodles come in lots of different sized packs. The ones I buy are usually 12 servings so I think it's difficult to criticise someone when you don't know what size that 1/4 pack comes from.

The noodles I use have eight servings to a pack.
You can add rice if you are very hungry. It is a guideline, many people are living on the edge and it is set to become worse.
I am trying to help people who are struggling with a few ideas. If Feral moon and and Happy MJ don't like what I post then maybe they should actually try living on £20 a week and post their own ideas instead of criticising try helping out!Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Keep the posts coming BUTTERFLY BRAIN they're helping so many more people than they're annoying. Brilliant idea to start this thread in the first place and such good ideas to help folks manage their food budgets at a time when EVERYTHING is becoming more expensive and the food spend is not increasing. Thank you, you've inspired so many of us, long may it continue!0

She said it cost 10p for 1/4 packet (I'm assuming this must be per head as I don't know of any noodles costing as little as 40p per pack unless they are those small packs of super noodles!) so won't be a particularly large pack. The two portion packs of fresh noodles cost around £1 per pack.
I'd actually be interested to know which brand and size of pack BB uses.0
