OS way to moisturise extremely dry hands

Options
I have very, very dry hands (can't wear rubber gloves because of latex allergy and hate them anyway even if non-latex). The cream I use is effective, the only effective one I know, and not outrageously expensive, but I could do with using it less often to save money. Does anyone know an OS alternative? (Not lard please, bleeeuuuugh!_pale_)

Thank you.

Any oil will be great for your hands - I use a light olive oil as it is less scented than extra virgin but vegetable oil would be fine. If you want to spend slightly more then avocado oil is wonderful for the skin and you could add some chamomile or lavender essential oils to help with healing chapped hands :)

Or, you could use something like aqueous cream which is very cheap but I prefer oil myself.

Try covering them in vaseline (huge jar in the 99p store) and wearing cotton gloves at night when they are really bad, wash off in the morning.:D

Any will be more effective if you can wear cotton gloves overnight after using cream / oil liberally. Helps it sink in. This is also good for feet, only using socks obviously!

I too have a latex allergy and hate the smell of non-latex gloves.

I found the Avon hand cream with glycerine one of the best.. and it is dirt cheap. I have a tube in every bag and several strewn about the house.

Anything containing alcohol makes it much worse and using liquid soap or any kind of detergent makes it worse too so I avoid those if possible.

I had terrible eczema as a baby so have always had issues with skin..

Slop on cream and wear 100% cotton gloves over night and use hand cream throughout the day.

Super cheap aqueous cream from chemist is good too.. and can be used instead of soap..

  • Ah. Now. Well then. You see the thing is, this is my luxury, desert island item. :o

I've always had a bit of an OCD hand cream thing going on. I also have a lip balm fetish but that's for another thread I'm sure! Anyhoo, I've tried loads of hand creams in my life time and done extensive research. :D

I now get an 8oz pot of this:

for Christmas every year (easy to please!). It lasts yonks. Honestly, one pot a year is fine and I'm an addict. And, it really is brilliant. I've not found anything else that comes close. And, it doesn't leave any greasiness either.

Sorry that it isn't very OS. Although, as it lasts a year it doesn't work out too bad on a daily basis (thats how I sell it to the OH!). :rotfl:

Another vote here for aqueous cream. OH swears by it, he says it stopped his fingers cracking.

You can buy it in supermarkets as well as chemists. Although you do have to search for it. Its usually with the medical creams, bottom shelf in the corner ;) You can get it in £land as well, but a smaller tub than in the supermarkets.
  • I pour a small amount of almond oil and some table salt into the palm of my hand and rub well into my hands, then rinse. It exfoliates and moisturizes at the same time.
