  • If a business centre has empty units they'll randomly get potential customers wander in to look round/see them to choose one.... they might take their business elsewhere if they couldn't view the empty unit that'd be the one they'd have chosen. They will also rent them out by the hour/day at the drop of a hat.

    To put it another way - if you worked next door to a hire car company, would you expect them to lend you a car to go shopping at lunchtimes?

    Of course not but no they don't rent them out by the hour or day and any viewings are strictly by appointment only as the business centre manager comes in specifically for them and is not based here.

    I'm not expecting anything. That's why I asked what's reasonable. Toilet it is then

    I think it's unreasonable to ask you to express milk in the toilet like it's some dirty secret! You should be given a sufficient hygienic space in which to do so, surely this would come into employment rights? I'd suggest you have a word with an independent source that can advice appropriately and legally as to where you stand with this.

    I'd also expect a little more human courtesy from your boss seeing as you have been a loyal employee for so many years so totally think your disappointment in their reaction is entirely justified! Are they a particularly family/women hostile company at all? What's the female to male ratio like? Has this situation not come up before?!

    The company is not Marks & Spencer. It rents 2 office units.
    Even the OP recognises that it's a long shot!

    It's not up to you - they have to provide you with somewhere to do it.

  • They do have to provide you with somewhere (not sure if this is a law or a guideline). However you have admitted this is not likely to happen because of practicalities. How about asking for an extra 10 minutes at lunch (perhaps in exchange for working an extra 10 mins in the evening) so you can get home and do it.

    the thing about using one of the empty offices, how would you get access, would the business centre manager have to allow access at your arranged times, as I doubt you would be given your own set of keys.

    Apologies if this sounds a daft question but wouldn't it just be easier to do whatever you need at home? Wouldn't the milk need to be stored there anyway?
    Again apologies if I have got the wrong end of the stick as I know little about the subject - I'd never heard of "expressing milk" before.
