Chainsaws!

Options
My Builder is cutting some old trees down, at the rear of our Garden!

I purchased a Ryobi pcn 4545 chainsaw from B & Q. the first one the engine seized(petrol operated). Took it back, and they refunded the money. re-purchased , and its blunted 14 chains within minutes! They suspect another faulty chainsaw and advised to take it back!

Question; can anyone advise on a good chainsaw thats man enough for job?

I am not a believer in the nanny state but Health and Safety does have a bearing when using a chainsaw............

Your 'Builder' may well have a safety certificate and the appropriate H&S equipment but if you are supplying equipment you are sharing the liability.

Please feel free to ignore or flame me if you feel this is inappropriate .........

I will not comment on workmen and tools!

I doubt you could FIT 14 chains within minutes, let alone blunt them all....

If the chains are getting blunted too quickly it sounds like a problem with the chain - poor quality material? - or as a result of tensioning issues (having to force the saw through). Or maybe the workmen (trying to cut your house down when you're not looking)...

cr*p chainsaw , you only get what you pay for , a proper saw (husquvarna, sthill etc) will last ages , buy something decent , then sell on (ebay) when finished , will work out cheaper in the long run , ps most of what b+q sell is cheap chinese rubbish ,andy
  • Thanks to you all for your replies, and to andybk for his contribution! And my house is still in situ!

Well I took the chainsaw /and blunt chains back to B &Q this morning, and they refunded all the money! So I cant complain, and now my builder is using a handsaw to finish it off!

Sorry to ask the obvious, but did you put 2-stroke oil in the petrol? Or if 4 stroke, was there enough oil in it?

Also, if it's a one-off job, it's better to hire one than to buy one as you won't have any liability and any breakages will be covered.
Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.

Sorry, had to ask! Amazes me how many people think that engines don't need oil!
