How to treat damaged hair

My hair is fine and damaged, its getting very fragile and I don't know what more I can do. I'm using a hair mask every time I wash my hair on my hairdressers advice but still can't see any change, has anyone got any tips?

You could try Aphogee 2-step Protein. Its normally found in ethnic hair shops and be careful which you pick up as there are a few varieties.

Its not easy or pleasent to apply and can only be done once every 8 weeks or it will make your hair brittle and then it will just snap and fall out which isn't better then what you have! Its a mask that will work better the second time you've done it so its not going to show results on day one. It also leaves a residue in terms of the smell which isn't so great but goes after about the 4th or 5th hair-wash day.

Otherwise your better off chopping your hair and waiting for it to grow back stronger.

The last line in jenniewb is the best advice you can get, leave it alone, stop messing with it, let nature do its best, the hair that has grown has been damage externally,go back to nature as much as you can by cutting it as short at you are comfy with, wash it, brush it, leave it. wear a fashion scarf if you like,

Ive been there, done that, and its great
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Hair is dead, you can't repair it. The most important thing is to stop the damage - no heat styling, no brushing or combing when wet, sulphate-free shampoo, only very gentle up dos, very wide tooth combs, satin or silk pillowcase.

You can make temporarily strengthen your hair with either hydrolysed protein or coconut oil - both can penetrate hair which most ingredients/ products cannot so most hair masks will do little more that prevent tangling. Any product containing silicones (-cone, -conol, -xane) will form a barrier preventing the protein or oil penetrating the hair.

Lastly review your diet and stress management techniques.

  • Thanks for your replies. The only thing when I don't use heat on my hair it goes really awful like a puff ball but then the straightners don't make it poker straight anyway. What's the best sulphate free shampoo and should I use normal conditioner or just coconut oil? I'm using hair masks from the salon, my hairdresser says masks are the only thing that will work even store bought ones so I know she's not just promoting her own. Also being in the menopause doesn't help either.

I have very fine hair which breaks easily. I have been using VO5 Hot Oil treatments, you get 4 in a box from Boots or Superdrug. I use them once a week and it has helped my hair. Worth a try.
  • Berber Oil Hair Treatment with Argan Oil is amazing. Its the best thing I have found that doesn't weigh down my fine hair.

You can buy small bottles that don't cost much so you can try it, you only need a little so it lasts a long time.
  • Thanks for your replies, do you think its not worth keep using the salon hair care and go with something more natural? I will look into the argan oil and V05 as well as coconut oil, my Mum always used to rub coconut oil into her hair after she'd washed it but she put it on her hair when it was dry, is that how you you use it?

I would uses product for the 'poofiness' and quit with the straighteners.
  • I bleached mine a couple of weeks ago, so I have been trying lots of things - if I were you, I would leave off the straighteners, and find a good leave in conditioner. I blast mine with the cool setting on the hairdryer, till just damp then let it finish off drying naturally.

Also, a pre shampoo mask of mayonnaise (distribute through dry hair, cover with a shower cap, leave on at least half an hour, then shampoo and condition) seemed to help mine a lot. I also use a tiny amount of almond oil on dry ends (costs next to no money from home bargains or a chemist!)
