Solar security light

Today's Guardian has a reader offer for a Solar Security Light. Powers an LED to give the equivalent of 60 watts of light - setting either to constant light or just to detect movement up to 8 metres away.
Can anyone tell me if these work. I have had four of the bayonet type solar garden lights for some years and have not been impressed with the light they emit even after the sunniest days.
Is this security light likely to provide sufficient light during the whole year?

If it was set to only come on for a bit when triggered would that use less power, or does the infra red use power too, is what you have to ask yourself.
Our solar powered lights are fairly pathetic, although they are only meant to be 20W.
Can you adapt your present security light to take an LED- it only uses about 1W of electricity, so is pretty economical to run.
We have moon friendly lights, which we felt was important too for outside lighting-they point down only so prevent light pollution.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I've got this security light,
http://www.!!!!!!/products/smart-solar/solar-security-light/
It has it's moments especially if its been frosty buy generally it works well and is quite bright. The sensor is very sensitive and picks up birds sometimes so we get a strobe effect back yard but generally I've got no complaints.0 -
Is it worth it in a green way?
The energy used in making one of these lights is probably much higher than the energy saved by using a solar panel to power them.0 -

May I ask if you are connected(work for/own etc) with ethicalsuperstore?
Nearly every post you have made is promoting products from this organisation who seem to charge a premium for their products.
If you look at Martin's introduction to this Green and Ethical Money Saving he states this should be about Money Saving and environmentally friendly.
That is entirely different to paying extra for products because they purport to be green.
Frankly from what I have seen of their products they are just another commercial organisation who have jumped on the Green bandwagon and selling overpriced goods with misleading descriptions.0 -
no I'm not connected with the website other then being a customer. Its based in Newcastle and as I'm just up the road I have placed numerous orders for products and collected them. I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion but I was just responding to the Solar security system post and that was my opinion.
And in response to tr3mor I bought this because I didn't want to deal with excess wiring and it's cost effective.0 -

But its not just this device its so many other products you keep 'pushing'(wine/chocolates - scores of things) and nobody could pretend that many of them are 'money saving.' as they are so much more expensive.0
