We going to Glasgow next week and one day taking in Edinburgh daughter wants to see Scotlands capital city?

Want to know whats to do and see and how much it costs at the castle, we got a few other places we taking in and if locals think the castle worth it fine will give it a try but dont want to waste valuable time just looking at pictures and paintings etc .. seen one you seen them all so to speak

Thanks

Rose

11GBP for adults, 5.50 for kids.

We have been and it is very good, crown jewels, lots of pretty things, history, well made explanatory displays, timelines etc.

However, if you aren't really into history then it's free to walk up the Royal Mile and have a look down at the views from the Esplanade at the front of the Castle without paying to go through the gates...lots of tartan shops etc. on the Royal Mile leading up to the actual castle.

Princes Street Gardens, Jenners dept. store, all the clothes shops, Edinburgh Dungeon, the new Parliament building ?(I'm not impressed by it, sorry)

But for my money, I'd go to Mary King's Close- a tour back to life in the 15th Centuryin buried streets they found under the city chambers- it was easily the best trip I've done in Edinburgh- not suitable for under 8s, it depends on the age of your dd- you may have to book MAry King's close in advance- it is a must see for most people visiting Edinburgh.

If you are at the Royal Mile then there is the Museum of Childhood as well which is great to visit. This has free entry :j

There is also the National Museum of Scotland which at the moment has a Pixar Exhibition that your daughter might enjoy.

    Also free entry :j

    Hope this helps

I found Edinburgh castle to be a bit of a - whatever the opposite of a tardis is!

A lot of the castle wasn't open for visitors (private residences/offices) and there are about 3 million (I may be exaggerating slightly) gift shops.

Apart from these the displays are great. The crown jewels are a bit of a disappointment in comparison to the exhibition you go through to see them, they build it up a lot! Not to say the three or four items on display aren't great though.

£11 is a bit steep too - just like the walk up to the castle!

You have to pay for the Pixar Exhibition at the Museum, but can highly recommend the museum. Has nice cafe too :)
