Can it be possible to be wholeheartedly OS in London or am I just being a bumpkin?

Ooh well there's me then in the second most deprived borough in the country (if i've read it correctly) and as I said I absolutely love it and so do my two children now twenty six and nineteen.

I have never had any worries about coming home at night - I think you just apply common sense and either you do or you don't worry what ever area it is.

Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

I would advise you to ignore all these bloomin tables and actually get a feel for the place yourself and get talking to folks who actually live there.

Everyone likes different things - I have lived all over London since I was nineteen and am definitely a North side of the river type of girl overall.

I grew up in Hertfordshire and would propbably want to curl up and die if I moved back there although I like to visit.

Really only you will know what is right for you but I always say you take yourself with you where ever you go and that has a lot to do with whether you are happy or not!

Out of interest, what was it about hertfordshire you didn't like? I have a daughter and have considered living there and commuting into London instead ...(sorry to hijack OP) I may be moving back to London next year, but I want to move somewhere that has a bit more of a community feel!

It wasn't that I didn't like it - I was perfectly happy there I just feel like I would be bored out of my brain if I moved back somewhere like that.

I do love the country especially the sea but think I would prefer something more extreme were I to leave London which isn't likely.

(Which probably makes no sense at all!:rotfl:)

Ps there is definitely a community feel where I live - I know all the neighbours this street bar one house and also plenty in surrounding streets.

At one point years ago we had twenty five kids in this street in various age groups and they all played out together and looked out for each other.

It's only a little road - nineteen houses and one way and I love it!

As for being OS, you will still need to budget carefully, take packed lunches, cook & eat at home rather than take-aways, using up food via meal planning, shopping around to find the best sources locally to where you find to live, you can also looking st growing some veg in window boxes or tubs. Eating out will be more expensive, and it is easy to "go back to old ways"
    Good luck. DG

Oh dear.. what is one person's idea of heaven - may be another person's idea of something else ;)

I personally quite like having nothing to do with my neighbours, everyone keeps themselves to themselves and.. hope it stays this way :)

Polite "hello" when we pass each other is more than enough - for me.

As to so many kids running outside... kids being kids.... ermmmmmmm

Each to their own of course :)
