Blimey. Biggest irony in all this, our regular dentist is the one doing the referral to the orthodontist because of overlapping teeth.
I know wisdom teeth are not supposed to affect existing teeth. In my personal case they did close the gaps left following tooth extraction for braces. I didn't wear my braces for very long because they were so painful, so didn't get any benefit from them. My teeth just moved somewhat to fill the gaps all on their own.

All teeth will move forward with or without wisdom teeth. It's called mesial drift and it's this natural movement of teeth that you harness when you have braces. It also sometimes fills up gaps from extractions particularly if the teeth are taken out when you are young. There is a ton of research to say wisdom teeth do not push teeth out of line and so they are no longer routinely removed these days.
The problem with removable braces (and retainers) is if you continuously take them in and out or don't wear them for a day or so the teeth are constantly moving and therefore painful. If you persevere and keep them in they soon become comfortable and only ache for a day or so when they are adjusted.0
