Leaving job - final salary

Hi all, I am leaving my current job and need advice on when I should receive my final salary. My last official day is 7th September but am actually in the office til the end of this coming week, as I have holiday owing to me I am taking that last week as annual leave. I get paid 1 month in arrears so basically have been paid for August already, but am wondering about my annual leave/one week's holiday payment. I have been told by the lady that deals with HR queries that I have to wait until the end of September to receive my final salary, however I thought that if you leave a job you should be paid your final wage upon leaving, if not shortly thereafter. Is there any way I can 'demand' that they pay me before the end of September? Only because I could really do with this extra cash to help in my travel expenses for new job. Thanks!

Short answer - no.
If they normally pay at the end of the month, then the amount of your pay which is due for September (plus any holiday you would have accrued up to 7 September but which wasn't taken in the final week of your employment) can be paid at the normal time.
If your written particulars of your employment say that payment of salary is on, say, 24th of the month or next earlier working day, then that should be the day your pay is in your bank account and you should receive your P45 at about the same time.
I suppose you could ask for a small advance if you will be in real diffiulty. If not, just be very careful with the pay you have just received for August or make use of your credit card where perhaps normally you would not do so.0 -
Thanks LittleVoice, I dont own a credit card. Think I will just ask the HR department directly if there is any way they could please make an exception in this case and pay me when I leave. It wouldnt be an advance if I leave the company on the 7th of the month and the pay date is 28th of that month....I would be paid up to date wouldnt I?0

It would be an advance if it were part of what would normally be paid later - that is it is before the normal due date.
It may not be a simple thing to do, to pay you on 7 September instead of 28 September. HR are unlikely to be the ones actually processing the payroll and getting a separate pay run just for you might be a cost they don't want to pay especially if it is an external payroll company.
An advance may be easier in that they could pay you something (definitely less than you would actually be due) and then to notify payroll that that has been done so it can be deducted from your final pay that they process.
This does, of course, depend on the way that your current employer organise pay.
Can't do any harm to ask - but as a favour, not a right.0 -
Ok thanks for explaining, I will ask really nicely then :-)0
