TEFL Training and jobseekers allowance

My daughter wants to do the TEFL course. She has just finished a Degree at Uni and is planning to go to Australia for a year. She has just lost her job and is signing on and will get JSA and HB. The Tefl can be done as a 4 week course, full time.
Am I correct in telling her she probably won't be able to receive JSA whilst training as she won't be actively seeking work.

Also does anyone know an easy way to work out if a course has accreditation. Thanks

I'd say she wouldn't be able to get JSA for the reason you stated.

There's loads of TEFL's out there. If in doubt go for the Cambridge CELTA - and 2nd best would be Oxford Trinity Cert (often (but not always) reputable schools and academies will ask for these by name in their job ads).

  • Check if her university does one (most do) she might get a discount and it will be accredited.

To teach in a native English-speaking country such as Australia you need to have a recognised qualification with at least 6hrs of actual teaching practice (where you teach real students as opposed to your fellow trainees). Currently the only courses in the UK that meet this requirement are the Cambridge CELTA and the Trinity CertTESOL. i-to-i offer the EDI CertTEFL which meets the criteria but which would require you to study a 140hr online TEFL course first.

The good news is that the British Council is currently offering a grant of up to 50% of the tuition fees for either a CELTA or a Trinity CertTESOL course. For more information and/or to apply see http://englishagenda.britishcouncil.org/english-teaching-graduate-scheme.

To find a CELTA course see http://cambridgeesol-centres.org/centres/teaching/index.do. To find a TrinityCertTESOL course, use this link (http://www.trinitycollege.co.uk/site/?id=201) and click 'find a CertTESOL course near you'. Click on the 'course providers' link and download the PDF.

Thanks everyone so much for all your responses. The good news you gave briona is great news. My daughter would be borrowing the money from us and she's already had to borrow, so if there's a chance she could get 50% back that would really cheer her up.

We've had a look and as she's in London there are plenty of course providers near to where she lives. We'll definetly follow the Celta route. Thanks again everyone.

Hi. I forgot to mention in my first post (as I didn't know you/your daughter) was/were based in London.
