Giving out your telephone number...

I hate giving out my mobile number as I seem to get those annoying text messages that you have to pay to text back to in order to opt out....

I don't give it unless it has a little * by it and I always opt out of spam.. I have also started putting 0044 in front as that seems to stop the texts coming through, hopefully this won't stop me from winning though!! Does anyone have any other ideas?

I got a really basic mobile phone from Carphone Warehouse for 99p plus £10 credit. Used the credit up for texting comps and just kept the phone for the number.

Or there are free sim cards on offer sometimes that you could put in an old phone if you have any.

I just ignore the txt messages and delete.;) When I started comping on here I used to get a fair amount of junk post. I suppose this is the 'new way' and we have got to get used to it.
On a lighter note - on Thursday I got a phone call on my mobile to say I had won £100 of gardening gift vouchers to spend on their website. :T
This was a comp that was attached to a general 'junk' email from the company. Hope this helps xx

Quite often if you enter your home phone number where it asks for your mobile it will be accepted, even if you have put it in already. Not in every case but I try not to give out my mobile.

I wouldn't ever text them back to opt out, as sometimes this lets them know that they have an active number and so will continue pestering you. If you get spam messages, you can forward them to 7726 for free. This will alert your mobile provider that you believe the message to be spam and they will try to stop the messages reaching you. I do this and only get one once in a while. I enter competitions all the time too, so I think it works quite well. HTH

I use an old mobile that had been sat in a draw for years, also managed to get a free sim card from tesco, like some of the others have said used up the credit on text comps, not that it ever rings
  • Hi,
I also have started recieving these texts. I have had 4 so far today and 2 just came through at 12.30am which woke me (have phone on loud as dp works nights)
The phone number is 66333 and a company called mobile candy.
It starts the message saying "Free msg......" but upon googling it appears they charge you for each message sent?
Currently on hold trying to get through to virgin to see if i have been charged.
Any idea how to stop this happening? Im normally so careful when entering comps to check/uncheck the boxes.

I got 3 messages through at about 11 last night. I text STOP and got a message to say I had unsubcribed! Must have been a tick box on a comp we entered last night. Checked my 02 account this morning and think I've only been charged for sending STOP very annoying and has taught me an important lesson!
