County court or debt collection agency? Best option to get our money back?

Hello,

We would really appreciate some advice.

We are in the process of building an extension on our house and a month ago ordered and paid for some reclaim bricks from what we thought was a bona fide company.

To cut a long story short, the bricks were never delivered and despite being promised a full refund, the money didn't arrive. After a week and a final email telling me he was on the way to the bank to do the transfer, the trader stopped communicating and no money arrived.

We have sent a final letter before court action and he has not responded to this. We are prepared to start the court proceedings but someone has suggested using a debt collection agency.

Does anyone have experience of using these? Would you recommend them? Would we be best off just going down the court route or can we run both concurrently?

Thanks very much in advance.
