Hands in his weeks notice, works it and doesn't go back.

I applaud the OP for taking his position. Whilst it does the business and his/her ex-colleagues no favours, it was essentially a position they were forced into by management. I would not consider a manager/owner suitable by insisting one of their casual/part-time staff run the restaurant while they are away as well as take on full-time cheffing duties! I've never done that kind of work, but even I know that is bordering on madness!

Throw in the fact the OP has been having difficulties sleeping following shifts, there was no way they were in a fit state to work.

OP, I would advise (even though it's done now) that you would off been best of handing in your notice and calling in sick (sleep problems can be serious, especially when you're working in a kitchen). You can self-certify for a week.

Good luck finding a new job, but see a doctor as well.

[edit] Assumed OP was male! Changed a few bits.

Unbelievable. Got no money, only works 2 days a week and quits their job.

Well as you're the only chef, I assume it won't be able to be open now you've walked out?

Your employer is completely entitled to sue you for the losses that having to close the restaurant costs him. If he has to hire in agency staff, he can sue you for the cost of the agency staff.

    Sue, get real:rotfl:

How much is that going to cost the employer? It would cost them more to bring a case then the compensation expected for bringing in agency staff.

Also as you appear to be The Daily Mail type of reader, wouldn't there in your view be another 20 people hammering on the employers door next morning offering to take over his job?

I used to work as a part time delivery driver for the home shopping branch of a well known supermarket, who isn't asda, morrisons, sainsburys or waitrose.

The boss was fresh out of training and seemed to think it was perfectly possible to average 30mph between drops. Be it in town or down windy country lanes. I was stressed out, barely sleeping and she was always on my back.

One morning I was planning my route whilst simultaneusly (sp?) printing off the delivery manifests for the other drivers (not my job but the supervisor was rushed off her feet as well). The manager came in 2 minutes before I was due out the yard and startted having a go at me about something or other that I hadn't done before leaving work at 11pm the night before I came back in at 7am.

I said "Tell you what, I'll do you a favour. Seeing as I'm that f******g s**t at this juob you'd be way better off without me - See ya!"

She told me I couldn't do that, I told her I was and walked out the door.

She then spent an hour going round the shop trying to find someone who'd do my round that day, didn't manage to, gave up and went to do it herself, and backed into a customers car :rotfl:

I never worked out if they paid me all they owed me, but sometimes life's too short to give a s**t.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • Years ago I worked at the dss as an admin officer. I hated everyone there and hated the work. I was only young then and I let everyone walk all over me. I also couldn't live with myself for having to sanction people for silly reasons. My supervisor was a !!!!! who was out to get me. I was on my lunch break one day and I looked at my watch and saw it was time to head back. I was so relaxed and happy sitting in a cafe in town that I didn't go back. I phoned them 4 hours later to say I wouldn't be back.

I couldn't go and sign on because it was the dss. I went on holiday for a week and when I got back there was a letter offering me a job on a supermarket checkout.

Id love to walk out of the job I've got now. I work for a charity on a permanent contract. The charity is near to reaching it's reserves (I.e. Will have to close when the funds reach a certain point). Its my job to apply for funding and I've secured a few small donations but the big ones don't exist anymore. I know that the committee had a meeting about whether or not to keep me as I found some notes about it in a filing cabinet. Their problem is if they make me redundant and replace me with a volunteer that works for free I can take them to a tribunal as the job either exists or it doesn't. If they sack me for something I've done wrong I can take them to a tribunal as I haven't done anything wrong. So instead they are trying to make my life hell so I'll leave of my own accord. But I'm afraid I won't be doing that. If they want me to go they will have to either sack me or make me redundant. Iv been being extra efficient for the last year or so and that makes them so irate. They are constantly looking for something I've done wrong so they have a reason to get rid of me.
