I always thought "old age pension" and "State Pension" were one and the same thing but my husband tells me that an old age Pension is something you get if for some reason you do not have a state pension. Is this right?

No
"old age pension" is a nebulous term. It could be used to refer to the 2 state pensions (the basic state pension and SERPS/S2P) or it could refer to a private/company pension received when you retire due to age to distinguish it from a medical retirement pension0 -
If you don't have a state pension or any other means of supporting yourself in old age you could be eligible for "pension credit" which is basically income support for oldies.
Perhaps that is what he means.Trying to keep it simple...

Well - hubby is correct. There is a pension payable at age 80 if your contributions are not enough for the full State pension
