She called again today but perhaps left it too late. What are their starting & finishing times?

Thanks jem. Hmm that's a bit of a strange one. She says she called at dinner time or thereabouts on Saturday last week & couldn't get through.
I do think she's a bit 'scared' of calling them. Scared is perhaps a bit strong, but perhaps she finds it a bit daunting like. She hasn't said so, it's just my view.
She really needs to get in touch with payroll from her previous job to request this P45.
Is it worth calling HMRC & telling them the situation without having the P45 though, or is it a bit pointless without it?0 -

No it's still worth it. She could ask to have her main tax code - ie 810L, attached to her new job and BR attached to the other job meanwhile.
Best time to phone HMRC is before 9am if possible.0 -
Well, bit of an update actually...
There was a letter waiting for my sister today who has just got home from her new job. Turns out it's the P45 from the old place.
3 sections - a page for the new employer, a page for my sister & a page for the new employer to complete. So as she's received this Friday evening, she'll be handing it in when she's back at work next week.
Am i correct then in thinking that her new employer will now take care of everything (once they receive their 2 copies)? Or will my sister still need to call HMRC even though she's handing in the relevant sections to the new employer (& tell them the above (what you said jem))?0 -

What info is on the P45? Also what date - is it for this tax year?
As the P45 is after the first pay date, the new job may be unable to use it if they have already used the P46 and been given a tax code from HMRC.

With the pension ending, I would still advise calling HMRC as they need to be aware of that and that she now only has one job. They may also be able to tell her whether to give the P45 to her new employer or to send it to them - neither of those may be necessary if the old employer has electronically filed thei part of the P45 to HMRC and they already know.0 -
Part1: (copy for employee)
Employer PAYE ref
NINO
Leaving date (dated as today, which is actually incorrect as she left before, but i guess this is the result of no formal resignation letter)
Tax code at leaving date (580L)
Last entries on P11 deductions working sheet @ month number 5 (whatever this is?)
Total pay to date: £334
Total tax to date: £0
Works payroll number
Sisters address
Employer's address
Part2: (copy for new employer)
Employer PAYE ref
Name
Date of leaving
Tax code at leaving date
Total pay to date
Total tax to date
Part3: (for completion by new employer)
Info as above, but additional...
New employer PAYE ref
date new employment started
works payroll num
tax code in use if different to tax code in box 6 (580L)
then just standard stuff - name, address, dob etc
And what of the overpaid tax? Will she get this balanced out over the course of the 2012-13 tax year when she's given the correct code?0 -

So certainly valid for this tax year but may not be able to be used by new employer as I said earlier. And what of the overpaid tax? Will she get this balanced out over the course of the 2012-13 tax year when she's given the correct code?
Yes she will but she needs to get onto HMRC and get things moving.
Did the pension provider supply a P45? They don't normally do so apparently as normally once someone stops receiving a pension they are deceased. My younger son got a P45 from the pension company after the pension company made a mess of their return to HMRC with my eleder son and marked my 22yr old son as deceased when his pension finished. To say I was not amused with them was an understatement! I then insisted on a P45 for my younger son when his pension finished to ensure they didn't make such a mistake again.0 -
Thanks a lot jem. Big help as ever. Nope, my sister hasn't received a P45 from the pension provider. She just informed them she'd left college & that seems to have been that.
Call to HMRC it is then.0
