No offence meant, but it sounds like you are handling this in a very wishy-washy way.

She clearly sees you as weak and so she is going to walk all over you.

She had no right to 'tell' you she was going home. She should have asked to go home if she was unwell.

And if you wait for her to upset your customers before sacking her, how do you undo the damage she does?

Good waitressing staff are in good supply at the moment. Get shot of her and give the job to someone who deserves it!
You had me at your proper use of "you're".
  • There are many people out there who would be more than willing to do this work, might be worth speaking to your local college hospitality department. They would love the opportunity for real work experience and would have a much better attitude.

No offence taken you're absolutely right! People don't see me as authority and I do struggle with that.

    I have to man up!!

As people have said if you were to sack her you wouldn't find it difficult to replace her quickly. If you sacked her tomorrow I'd wager anything that you could have the post filled by someone better by the end of next week.

I'm not saying you should, but what does your gut instinct tell you?

Trouble is that by being such a wimp, if you do finally sack her and have not followed the correct procedures, she could take you to the cleaners.
    Is it your own business?

No you don't, you sound like a decent person, no need to change who you are to manage well, you just need to set some rules and stick with them.

If they don't respond well to the carrot it doesn't mean you need to get out the stick, it means they are the wrong person, so best let them go.

Also picking the right staff in the first place always helps ;)
  • Get yourself a disciplinary procedure and use it. Give her a final written warning or get some other people in and sack her.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I thought within 2 years now people can be sacked without any reason given? not sure why so many people think the OP should have made this formal.
