How soon can you quit a job after starting?

Basically I am at the end of my current job contract and have been looking for other jobs. I have had a few interviews with other companies but there is one job I really want. The issue is they haven't started the interview process yet and time is running out.
Ive just had a job offer from one of the other companies ive applied to and im thinking of accepting purely because time is running out and I can't afford to go without money. I feel as though I'm settling for less. Although there is no certainty that I'll get the job I really want anyway.
Upon accepting my job offer how long do I have to work there before I can leave? What's the norm?

It depends on the contract or if you have gotten around to signing it yet. And even then there might be a cooling off period.
If it happened within a week or two I would just leave because they would have a second best candidate in place and it's not like you will ever need them for a reference.0 -

As stated it would depend on the contract but usually if you've been there less than 6 months to a year it can be as little as a week. You wouldn't have to work your notice but in not doing so you may jeopardise any money owing to you from untaken holidays and the like.
I personally would go for it. As you've said, you can't afford to go without money and there's no guarantee of getting the other job so you don't want to not take this one and not get the other. The employer might be a bit miffed but they'll be able to replace you.0 -

wht not? I know someone who didnt go back to a job after one day as the job was not what they interviewed for.Notmyrealname wrote: »No you can't.0 -
You can leave at any time. If you have a contracted notice period and you don't give the required notice, technically the company could sue for breach of contract. However, this almost never happens as the cost to the company is more than just letting you go. Be aware, the company can withold pay if you've just quit with no notice.
Also, if you're paid mid-month (two weeks ahead, two weeks behind) you will owe them any pay you've been given that you haven't yet done the work for. This they're more likely to chase you for.0 -
I was made redundant in May. Got a new job at the start of June in a place that I hated with a passion. Left after two weeks due to getting a new job that I preferred. Due to being there less than a month I was only required to work out my day, however I worked out the week simply because my boss was a star and I didn't want to leave her in the lurch.Mortgage - £99,000 (Septmber 2018)Halifax Credit Card - £1500 (Septmber 2018)0

Employment law states a minimum one weeks notice.
Whilst the person you know didn't go back, they were in breach of contract and could have been sued should the employer decide to.0
