Thoughts on relocating?

I'm umming and arring over whether or not to apply for a job with Waterstones in Oxford. I'm in Doncaster at the minute.

I worked for them over Christmas last year in Preston and was offered a permanent role, but due to my final major project at uni I couldn't take it. I know they always prefer experience which is why I'm considering (though i know that doesn't always guarantee anything) but I can't decide. It's a permanent job, not a seasonal temp and starts at £6.11/hour for 37 hours/week.

What do people think? Is it worth applying? I know i'd have to go for a house share but I'm wondering if I should wait for the one's near me to start advertising for their seasonal temps and try to get a permanent role from that (though again it's not guaranteed).

Would people here go for it?

  • I imagine they will get a lot of applications in any event so why don't you try

No harm in applying although I'd think that as it's a seasonal temp role you won't be considered due to the distance - even if you are considering relocating.

I know I will be jumped upon any second now but... Doncaster, a dump with no jobs, or Oxford, a lovely city in the heart of a thriving travel to work area... I don't see a lot to think about. Go for it.

Except that I clearly stated it WASN'T a seasonal temp role.

Ok missed that. But it's still a minimum wage job?
Anyway, like I said, you have nothing to lose anyway.

It's more than minimum wage and rises after 3 months.

But yeah like you said nothing to lose really so am going to go ahead and apply.

    Thanks :)
  • Oxford is a lovely city in a lot of ways and as the posters above have said, there's no harm in applying - you can make a decision to relocate or not when/if you get the job.

It is an expensive place to buy/rent property but if you have a bicycle then it's really easy to get around and your transport costs are nil. Be aware that not all of the city is lovely though and there are a few places that are cheaper but not particularly safe and best avoided (Blackbird Leys, Barton and bits of Cowley).

The other downside is that through the spring and summer if you want to get anywhere you have to battle your way through hordes of gawking tourists who walk at a speed of about half a mile and hour and constantly stop in your path to take photos or consult their map.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

When i visit london i do the tourist spots but not the walking at snails pace and stopping in people's paths bit. I generally find the following works wonders; a little elbow nudge, the death stare followed by copious amounts of tutting or just plain shouting loudly 'christ almighty people if you go any slower you'll stop. some of us do have places to get to!!' :D

I have no scruples at all ;) hehe
