Me and OH have been invited to a christening later for the baby daughter of a friend. We have no idea what gift to buy and didn't want to buy silver moneyboxes/curl boxes and whatever.
We were thinking of buying a hardbacked children's book that we could write an inscription in but didn't want it to be particularly religious, more of a story book.
I'd welcome your thoughts on this, also if you could recommend an unusual hardbacked book that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

When I was asked to be Godmother to my friend's little boy, I had the exact same thought.
I ended up getting him a pile of books that he could use throughout his childhood including first Bible, Child's encyclopedia, junior dictionary, and other reference books. I also got him a collection of Thomas Tank books and Roald Dahl for when he's older.
To me getting them interested in reading/learning is the best investment in their future and more useful than an ornament.
I remember that it didn't LOOk imrpessive when they were opening the pressies and everyone was oohing and ahhing at cute figurines etc, but I KNOW it was a present that he and his parents appreciate. I also remember another friend gave him a really lovely book about the differences between people etc, which i thought was a lovely sentiment! Maybe you could give something like that, a book which teaches a child about love and caring for other people. i think that's a perfect substitute to a religious book.0 -
I did this for my godsons, I got them both childrens versions of Shakespeare, Dickins & a adult version (the only version?) of Lord of the Rings.
I think encourganing a chidl to read is a fab gift. I wouldnt' have been offended at all if anyone had done this at my sons baptizm.

If you join the Folio Society they have a good introductory offer on Fairy tale books. http://www.foliosoc.co.uk/offers/detailsmed.php?OfferCode=7Z21
You have to buy 4 more books after this to qualify. They are not cheap but if you are into books they are top quality. Some go for quite a sum on Ebay too.0 -
This is a brilliant idea - The Book People are very good for buying sets of books at very reasonable prices.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060

My dd received a book when she was christened which we thought was a really good idea.
It is a 50 year old classic - The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery.
It is a parable and tells the story of an air pilot who meets a Little Prince when he has to make a forced landing in the Sahara Desert. The Little Prince tells him wise and enchanted stories.
It is a lovely book and our friend wrote a lovely inscription inside the cover."all endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time..."0 -
Ok its not a book but its something I have given as gifts and intend to give to twins for a christening gift.

Hiya,
I dont know if this will be any good for you but I have just brought my daughter for her 1st easter a book called 'guess how much I love you'.
I got it from the works (dont know if theres one of these shops near you) for £2 (came with card/tag/wrap).
It is a great hard back book that tells a lovely story.
A bible is a lovely traditional gift but I have 3 kids (2 boys and 1 girl) and we have never and probably will never use them (yes we have 3 bibles!!) and we are a catholic family!.
Another favourite book/books in my house are the 'mr men' how about buying a mr me or little miss collection?.
or just another thought how about a personalised book ?
I got 2 great ones from a company called identity direct (you can have the childs name/friends/house/birthday/pets included they will even personalise the 1st page with nice message 'on your christening'etc.... with date etc....
Hope this helps
xx

My son had the complete Winnie the Pooh as a big hardback book, this one on amazon is similar, that page gave me another idea - how about a big book of fairy tales?
Those are something they would enjoy as children and then again as adults.
My son was given this winnie book as one his christening presents and i thought it was a lovely present.Member 105 of 1% at a time - 23/100 :j0
