Best mattress, any recommendations?

I'm female, in my 20's, and have started to have back issues. I say issues as it isn't pain. It's more of just a feeling of being tense. I exercise regularly and also do yoga. If I don't do the exercise/yoga, I feel like my back is all cramped and uncomfortable. I also have to twist and turn my hips and spine a lot so it cracks (maybe that's what's causing the problem:P) as it seems to take some of the tension away. So I'm hoping a new mattress might help.

The old mattress I had before the one I have now was quite firm..I remember it being difficult to sleep on for the first week or so but then I got used to it and it was fine. The next mattress I chose was purposely soft, and again it was difficult for a week or so but I quickly got used to it.

So, I 'm really hoping someone can help suggest an all purpose mattress to me, one that's not too hard and not too soft, is comfortable but good for your back and pressure relieving/supportive, while not being too expensive!

Thanks in advance for any replies x

  • Mattresses are quite a personal choice, as you have found out, so any recommendation on here might not be the best for you.

Sounds like you don't like anything too hard or too soft. Have you considered a sprung mattress with a memory foam layer on top (or even an additional topper which can be bought separately)?

FYI Argos usually have loads on offer at half the RRP (if you believe that original price) and also have lots and lots of customer reviews. That should give you a few options.

you need to test a mattress before buying it. What works for you depends on weight, shape etc.

When you like flat on your back/side you should be able to put a flat hand under your back/waist - it should be snug not easy, but you shouldnt have to push hard/lift body to do it.

Memory foam toppers, or latez toppers (better as they react instantly - memory foam takes 20-30mins to adjust everytime you move) helps to support you as well.

My wife had back pain with our old mattress, which was some sort of coil / sprung mattress. We decided to bite the bullet and get a Tempur mattress, and no complaints since.

They're horribly expensive, but worth it for us. The Tempur website says they do a 60-night trial, might be worth giving it a go?

Hi I had almost exactly the same issue after I had slipped a disc during rugby; and my old mattress was just aggravating the issue I was tense even months after recovery; it was just driving me nuts, so I decided to change my mattress; did look at tempur and silentnight and wasnt going to pay £600 for a mattress. Then a friend recommended a mattress to me; basically its a hard reflex foam with memory foam on top so its firm but soft at the same time; slept on it and its gradually over the month eased the tensions and stiffness even after a hard gym session I feel great.:j
I've recommended it to 3 other friends; 2 of whom have already bought one and they agree with me. I bought it from AtlantisFurniture.co.uk the mattress was called the madrid. I can't put a link up because im a new user and may be a spammer -_- so you'll have to go to the site and scroll through the categories as follows bedroom>mattresses>memory foam mattress and then madrid

I did get it for £270 (double) at the time but they've reduced the price since. Oh and one other thing absolutely Love about this mattress is the fact it has a removable cover so can just get it dry cleaned and its like having a brand new mattress all over again.:j:j

Hope that helps and your back pains eases up :)
  • I dont get why people skimp on matresses. You spend (on average) 1/3 of your life on it !!!!!

£600 for a mattress isnt expensive really. The caveat being it must be comfortable. If a cheap on is then fine, but long term you get what you pay for. I had one of those hard/soft mattresses (after having a real good quality sof tone), and it was great - for a year or 3. Then it needed replacing as the "give" gave ::

I know have a propper quality mattress. Its pocket sprung, with a latex top (similar to memory foam but reacts instantly - rather than over several minutes) and then a soft cover. it was around £600 but will last 10 years plus - making it cheaper in the long term.
  • I now have a propper quality mattress.

Would you mind telling us the make and model.

I went for one of these which sounds similar to that purchased by Paul:

It's very comfortable but then I prefer a hard mattress. My only gripe is it can get a little too warm in the summer.

wouldnt recomend toppers its false ecconomy you still have your troublesome matteress get a proper memory foam there expensive but well worth every penny
ive personally got a tempur original and its without doubt my best night sleep
there alot of money but there is a company called ergoflex which are nearly a third of the price and similar specs and with great reviews

your going to spend 1/3 of your day asleep so a good decent matteress is a better investment

ive never understood why people are quick to spend over 1000 on a sofa then spend 200 on a bed
