I left Royal Mail in 1997 and i'm sure the Management there haven't changed for the better.

If workers ever needed a Union more than Royal Mail employees i don't know who does.

    only got worse
  • I work in HR, and my personal thoughts and experiences are that it really depends on the Union, and who is representing you. Many times a Union rep puts forward a good articulate argument, and challenges process or policy in the right way, helping their member. Also on a collective front they can give more weight and support to an argument that can be invaluable.

That said there are also numerous instances when they have done more harm than good, acting in an antagonistic manner, focusing on being aggressive and confrontational rather than actually getting positive change for their representative. This is true on both an individual and collective basis.

I guess what i am trying to say is it depends on who you are, what your role is, why you need them, and who it is that represents you.

It is unfair to say that unions are only interested in the larger employers. I am a member of Unite. I once worked for a company with less than 10 employees. The union took on my case, which went to tribunal. Not only did they cover the costs of all the legal work to prepare the case, they also organised and accompanied me to many meetings. It took time but eventually a decent settlement was acheived. For the amount of subs I pay, the service I received was second to none.
I now work for a far larger employer, where unions are recognised and actively involved in the management of the institution.
You never know when you might need the assistance.

I work in a school and my biggest fear would be an allegation made against me from a child, parent or other member of staff. I have the peace of mind knowing if I needed help and advice they are only a phonecall away for the sake of a few pounds a month.

Is this a Union sales technique?

Union bosses are not short of money themselves.
