Money as wedding gift at Anglo American Wedding

Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on an issue I am facing re money as a wedding gift...

Our wedding will be taking place in Jan in New York and around 50% of the guests will be American, 50% Brits. My fiance (who is American) and I both live and work in the UK and will continue to do so for the next few years at least. We have agreed that if guests want to provide a gift the easiest option would be cash as we have a home etc already. It should be fine for the UK guests as they can give sterling, perhaps through a wedding gift website... however not sure what to do with the American guests...I imagine cheques in dollars will incur bank charges at this end and exchanging cash will incur commissions.

Any suggestions for the most economical way to manage this would be most appreciated!...

Thanks :)

  • Cheques will indeed incur bank charges and depending on your bank these can be quite high (especially if you are paying per cheque and you have a lot of cheques of smaller values, the charges can work out really high % wise).

You get better exchange rates for larger amounts of cash so it may work out best to suggest cash in US$ then exchange it all at once into sterling.

Or, have you looked into transfers via paypal? I haven't used it for a while but it used to be quite good value for international transfers and it's fairly safe.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
  • Great, thanks for the advice browneyedbazzi... dollars it is, and will have a look at paypal also...
