Can you phone the pharmacy when you're ordering the prescription to say that you'll need the medication in the next couple of days and if they could order it?

Unfortunately not. The manufacturer of the particular medication had a production problem last year which meant it was in short supply everywhere in the UK and so the pharmacist was only able to order it when he actually had a prescription in his hand to show his stockist. None of the pharmacies were allowed to hold it as a stock item. Not sure if the situation has resolved yet, as we have got into the habit of making sure we order the new batch at least 10 days before the old batch is finished.

  • I think it is entirely up to the GP's discretion.

If you GP only prescribes one month's worth, and you are on more than one medication, you might want to consider buying a pre-payment certificate. I have several medicines and used to worry about affording to get them dispensed. I now pay £10.40 per month by DD and it covers all prescriptions.

thanks for posting this info as I have been holding off on my prescription because of cost
